Self-help anecdotes about Margo Timmins, lead singer of Cowboy Junkies as gleaned from wikipedia  1. Makes a flower arrangement before every concert to guard against stage fright. When the flowers are set on the stage it means the show is going to start. “I focus on the flowers and think about nothing.”  2. Drinks tea during her concerts, which is also soothing.  3. Goes to afterparties and will talk to people or will not and just stand around and be alone, doesn’t really care either way.  4. The best song she ever wrote was Misguided Angel and it was about her hair. (Misguided Angel Hair)

More and more money came to that house after we left, and when we left it it had copper gutters so that’s saying something! Courts where grass used to be, tiers where there were dales, whole Adirondacks where there were merely Catskills. The path we took always ended me up in the place where I stood when I watched it burn down the first time and had to tell a police man holding a waitress pad what had happened even though the barn was obviously collapsing right in front of us, I laughed at everything for ten minutes and then the only man around, this older neighbor carried me away through the snow. Seeing The Pelican Brief with mom - they both hate that movie now but when it was on the other night I heard dad say, Oh yeah, I haven’t seen that one in a long time, scary.

dollar bin misogyny

i spend a lot of time looking at records in thrift stores and in dollar bins at music stores…. why is it that linda ronstadt, judy collins, kim carnes, jane siberry, bonnie raitt, karla bonoff, joan armatrading, etc. (just a sampling based on an experience today), records tend to dominate these spaces?*

because i’m not willing to spend more than a dollar or two on a record, my collection is full of ‘marginal’ female singer-songwriters who apparently aren’t interesting enough to sell for more. to me they all seem just as good as (if not better than) whoever is making the more expensive records, tho (the beatles? bob dylan? i don’t even know, a bunch of d00ds).

*to be fair there also tends to be a lot of joe walsh, glenn frey, ‘bad’ jackson browne records, etc., not to mention a whole realm of mediocre d00ds who i don’t even know by name
